WHAT THE FOLK je nová tanečná inscenácia kolektívu BOD.Y, ktorú festival Bratislava v pohybe uvedie v slovenskej premiére. Zároveň ide o prvé dielo, ktoré festival koprodukuje. Inscenácia skúma, ako môžu ľudová hudba a tanec, tradične spojené s oslavami a rituálmi, prehovoriť prostredníctvom súčasných tiel a hlasov. Z jednoduchého pohybu, rytmu a spoločného zážitku vytvára priestor pre spolupatričnosť a hľadá to, čo nás môže spájať v čase spoločenského napätia.

We live in a time of tension and division. But is there something we all carry within us? Something that connects us? Movement – natural and human. While waiting at a bus stop or at the doctor’s office, I shift my weight from one foot to the other. A step here, a step there, and a rhythm appears – a dance. So human… Folk?
WHAT THE FOLK – what do we really mean by folklore? In front of you and together with you, we want to explore how dance comes into being. How it creates a connection between us. How it grows from the simplest steps, from our natural need to move. And how it gradually becomes richer and bolder. What might our folk dance look like today? Should it be folk, modern, contemporary – or simply human? Perhaps all its forms are closer to one another than we think. Join us in this curious game.
And is dance difficult to understand? No need to worry! All you have to do is open your heart and let the rhythm guide you. The joy of movement – and of creating something together – can slowly connect us, shape us and bring us joy.

PETER ŠAVEL
Peter Šavel is a Slovak-Belgian choreographer, dancer and performer working in contemporary dance. He studied dance education at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava from 2003 to 2006 and continued his studies at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels from 2006 to 2010. He has lived in Brussels since completing his studies.
His work develops through collaborative, organic and research-based choreographic processes that explore anthropological themes on psychosomatic and experiential levels. He also works as a coach, mentor, actor and teacher.
BOD.Y COLLECTIVE
BOD.Y, founded by Slovak dancer Soňa Ferienčíková, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to creating and producing dance performances by Slovak and international artists. It focuses on the intersection of contemporary dance and other performative disciplines, including dance film, video art and site-specific projects. The organisation initiates new works and welcomes proposals and collaborations with artists from different fields of the performing arts.
BOD.Y’s productions have been presented in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Belgium, France, Hungary, Germany, Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy, England, Mexico and Iceland.
To date, the organisation has produced 12 successful coproduction projects: DEBODY, IMAGO, BAKKHEIA*, LET ME DIE IN MY FOOTSTEPS*, SOTTY, POTMEHÚD, EVERYWHEN, Z/ONES, ADRENA AXIS, INBETWEEN, SOFT SPOT and IHOPEIWILL*.
Artists from around the world (USA, LAT, CZ, ES, BR, HU, BE, SI, RU, BRA) have contributed to these projects. Productions marked with an asterisk were selected for the prestigious Aerowaves platform.
EVERYWHEN was nominated for the DOSKY 2018 Award in the Outstanding Achievement in Dance Theatre category and has been performed almost 50 times across Europe, Mexico and Iceland. IHOPEIWILL won the DOSKY 2024 Award in the same category.
The three most recent productions were created as international coproductions with partners from the Czech Republic, Hungary and Germany, with financial support from international partners.
BOD.Y aims to sustain continuous artistic creation, raise awareness of contemporary dance in Slovakia and present Slovak dance across Europe. Its main focus is creating international projects in Slovakia while also presenting Slovak works and artists abroad. BOD.Y is built on long-term collaboration and personal relationships among the participating artists, based on the belief that quality and depth develop over time.
